Our second book is “Umut-Hayat Akan Bir Sudur” the book’s English name is “Hope”, but there is not a translation to English for that book, yet.

"Theme"

* Kulin family, which is living in Bosnia, with the unfortunate events such like war and poverty, immigrates to İstanbul. On the other hand, in İstanbul, Ahmet Reşat Bey is expelled. Residence don’t know what to do.  The book tells about two unlucky families’ story, and of course how two stories intersect at the same point.

"Plot"

* In the second book, Sabahat becomes a beautiful young girl and she starts to American College in İstanbul. Also she picks her nephew and niece, Bülent and Sitare to the College’s Primary School. One day, a college student, Aram sees Sabahat and little children, from the window and he loves Sabahat at first sight. He wonders about her and her family, he wants to meet that girl. By the chance, at lessons, Aram meets with Sabahat, and Sabahat tells him that Sitare and Bülent need a very good math teacher. Aram mentions that his math is good, and also he can come to their house and give math lessons to them, if she wants. Sabahat knows that her sisters, Suat and Leman are looking for a math teacher so she accepts it with pleasure. She tries to hide but she loves Aram, too. But there is an important obstacle between them. Aram is an Armenian boy. Her family knows that Aram is an Armenian, but they shouldn’t know anything about their relationship. They have to recognize Aram as the teacher of Sitare and Bülent, also a friend of Sabahat. But they won’t be able to hide it too much.

   By the way, with some unfortunate events, Leman and Sitare go to Ankara , the house of Suat, Leman’s sister for a little holiday.  In there, Sitare starts to suffer from depression and she loses her willing to study. Then she tells that she can evaluate the marriage proposals. Leman becomes very sad, but Leman and Suat introduces her to a friend’s friend, Muhittin. Muhittin is a handsome and intelligent boy, he is a very new engineer. He loves Sitare at first sight.

        In the book, surprisingly, everything will change for everyone. For Sabahat, for Aram, for Sitare and for Muhittin. 

"Characters"

- Sabahat

-Sabahat is the last child of Behice Hanım and Ahmet Reşat Bey. She is beautiful and intelligent; also she is a modern girl. She wants to study and go to university. This situation ruins the family culture because generally, after primary –maximum- high school, girls are getting married with men who are very very older than them.  But Sabahat doesn’t want to marry early. Sabahat loves Aram, her class-mate but her family don't know anything about it. Behice Hanım worries about her daughter. But Ahmet Reşat Bey supports Sabahat.

- Aram (Bala)

-Aram is Sabahat’s class-mate; also he is the home-teacher of Sitare and Bülent, Leman’s daughter and Suat’s son. He is an Armenian. Initially Ahmet Reşat Bey, after him all the family loves Aram because he is an intelligent, polite and cultivated boy. He loves Sabahat so much, but as we know, the family doesn’t know anything about this. When they learned about the forbidden love, everything will change

-Muhittin

-Muhittin is the youngest son of Gül Hanım and Zeki Salih Kulin. He is an engineer. He is working for developing the country. His aim is transmitting electricity, water and life to every corner, every nook and every little piece of country. He is living in Ankara, when a friend wanted to introduce a family which came a short holiday to Ankara from Istanbul, at first he didn’t want it, but when he saw Sitare, Leman’s lovely daughter, everything in his mind mixed up and at that point, with help of destiny, two family, Kulin and Yediç will surprisingly intersect.

-Sitare 

-Sitare is the daughter of Leman and Mahir and granddaughter of Ahmet Reşat Bey and Behice Hanım. She is pretty, young and childish. She can still misbehave with her cousin, Bülent. She loves jokes,and she is a very funny woman. Also she is beautiful. She loves Muhittin, and married him. Then, surprisingly she wanted to stay in Ankara, after marriage. She had a beautiful daughter from Muhittin, whose name is Ayşe.

“This is the second Ayşe Kulin book I have ever read. But unfortunately, I didn’t read the first book of the serie, “Veda”, because at first, I didn’t know that was a serie. Still, I loved that book.  While you are reading that book, you feel like you are reading two separate novels. First one, Reşat Bey’s family, second one, Bosnian Kulin family.  There are many characters in the book, but everything fell into place when I read it. Characters and speculation was very strong. Ayşe Kulin has a very good and fluent language."

-My Comments

-With that second book, I continued the adventures of an old family and old-new country.  And also I met with a new, Bosnian family, Kulins. The questions which are from the first book, Veda, are gained an answer, but also I had new questions, too. About Ayşe, Sitare, Muhittin, Sabahat and Aram.Also, I learned a lot about these years, these years’ culture, love and life style. The family continues years by years and you learn more and more about them. The characterization is very impressive and Kulin wrote the book with a fluent language. I think you “have to” read that book if you are interested in history or biographic books.
